Fruits, vegetables, meats and other foods need to be fresh to attract consumers. The content of a web site needs to be fresh to attract and keep visitors. Regular updates to a web site will also keep search engine spiders coming back for more as a web site is seen as more valuable and relevant to a particular search topic. In an e-commerce setting fresh content will let visitors know that you intend to be around a while. Regular updates and product additions are a required part of any successful online venture.

When shopping we look for produce that looks fresh and using other senses decide which oranges to buy from a stack of hundreds. When on the web visitors to web sites are looking for freshness also. Visitors want to see that a web site is there for the long haul and not here today and gone tomorrow. On of the key ways to keep visitors at your site and keep them as customers is to offer them fresh content, not just on the home page but throughout the web site. Give visitors a reason to return, not just to buy your product or service but because you offer them new and fresh content that will keep them interested. Not building a relationship with the customer or client is one mistake many online businesses make. Even if the visitor is not there to buy a product or service that day they will be encouraged to return if the site is constantly being updated.

Search engines like fresh content also. A web site that is updated frequently will rank higher than a web site that has grown stagnant. A search engine will visit a web site more often if there is a reason to do so (new product, articles, services…). Google has said in so many words that this is part of their search algorithm.

When a “brick-and-mortar” store offers a weekly ad in the Sunday paper they are trying to bring in customers on a regular basis with specials and sales. A web site that is in the business of selling product to consumers must offer the consumer a reason to visit on a regular basis in order to build customer loyalty. Weekly specials, e-mail newsletters and featured items are all part of building that loyalty and repeat visitors.

Regardless of the type of online venture you are planning or currently involved in, offering visitors to your web site fresh content and regular updates is the key to keeping them coming back for more.
